Now that Spring is here and everything is beginning to bloom it is time to clean up that yard from the winter. As your trees are beginning to bud and plant those new flowers in the beds to add some bright colors into your landscape remember to not forget the mulch. Here is some helpful tips and advice to consider as you begin to pick out a new mulch and decide how much you need.

 

 

Boy Scouts of America Annual Dinner

CMC is proud sponsor of the Hawk Mountain Council – Boy Scouts of America. At the 41st Annual Leadership Dinner, CMC had the honor of being able to witness what an organization like this can do for young children. NASA Astronaut Pierre J. Thuot was the keynote speaker of the night and spoke about his experience as a boy scout and how that is one of many characteristics and attributes that NASA looks for.

The Boy Scouts of America teaches boys and young men many basic values and skills in life, “Prepared. For Life”. The contributions made from the dinner will go to fund memberships for qualified individuals, programs, and activities. CMC hopes to be able to continue support of this organization for many years to come.

Joe Zidik honored as Pennsylvania’s Small Business Person of the Year

Joe SBA AwardThe U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) announced the winner of the 2015 Pennsylvania Small Business Person of the Year Award on Tuesday, March 31. The SBA has taken the opportunity to highlight the important role that entrepreneurs, small business owners, and many others from across the nation, play in our overall economy.

Small businesses across Pennsylvania had the opportunity to nominate a person or business for one of several different categories. A group of officials selected a recipient from each category to be recognized and be awarded for their accomplishments.  Joe Zidik, President and Owner of Custom Milling & Consulting, Inc., received Pennsylvania Small Business Person of Year Award for the state of Pennsylvania. Mr. Zidik was nominated by Martin Brill, Program Manager, International Trade, Kutztown University Small Business Development Center.

The SBA had predefined guidelines that nominees had to meet in order to be considered for the award:

  • Exhibit stability, growth, and expansion
  • Growth in employment
  • Proven record of increased profit
  • Innovation in a niche area that competitors are not addressing
  • Involvement in community organizations

CMC began as a small company that specialized in milling liquid based products for other companies, since 2002 they have expanded their services to include manufacturing a line of wet milling equipment, and produce their own line of premium mulch colorants. Currently their facility, located in Fleetwood PA, is comprised of four buildings that equal more than 70,000 square feet of space. In 2014 they opened CMC do Brasil, Ltda., a satellite contract processing facility in Curatiba, Brazil. They continue to explore new adventures and focus on innovation in every aspect of company.

During the week of May 4-8, the SBA will visit the winners of the awards to tour the business and meet with the winners. On June 18th, the winners will be presented their award and recognized at a small ceremony in Philadelphia, PA.

CMC Tests better than the rest!

CMC mulch colorants were tested next to a leading competitor and outperformed them by more than 15%. Mulch manufacturers that make colored mulch know that quality matters but so does efficiency for improving the bottom line.

CMC full line of colors includes:

  • Red
  • Crimson Red
  • Bursting Red
  • Brown
  • Spring Brown
  • Coffee
  • Xtra Black
  • Jet Black
  • Gold

Four colors were tested and compared in this trial; black, brown, spring brown and red. They were tested by demonstrating how many pounds per cubic yard were used to achieve the color that they wanted. The amount of dye that was used was the only variant in the test, the amount of water used was consistent. Below are the percentages that demonstrate the difference in how much dye was used between CMC and the competitor.

The chart above demonstrates that the mulch manufacturer used less of the CMC colorant than the competitor. Every color ranges in percentage from 15 all the way up to 44, and that can make a large difference in the production of the mulch.

CMC uses technology that takes the pigments and other ingredients, that breaks down the particles to produce microscopic sizes. This process has shown that you need to use less dye to achieve the desired results while still getting optimal coverage that will last.

CMC Dedicates New Building to Carl D. Yerger

Building 4 Image 1Custom Milling & Consulting, Inc., is pleased to announce the opening of its new 33,600 sq. ft. facility located adjacent to its existing three buildings. The new building has been named the Carl D. Yerger Logistics Center in honor of the late Carl D. Yerger, the late president/co-owner of CMC that passed away in March of 2014.

Mr. Yerger valued innovation, growth, and superior service through every facet of the company and he believed in “making our customers successful first and then our success will follow.” It was hard work, commitment, and leadership that Mr. Yerger aspired to and exhibited every day while working closely with employees and customers.

With the completion of the new building CMC proves that they are on a path that leads to the future. The layout of the new facility consists of the following:

  • State-of-the-art analytical laboratory for quality control
  • Large production area with 40,000 gallon capacity indoor tank farm
  • Storage area for equipment and parts
  • Warehouse area for both raw materials and finished products
  • Future cGMP Production facility for manufacturing cosmetics, food, and pharma related products

The Carl D. Yerger Logistics Center is one more stepping stone in the continued growth of CMC. Finding new ways to better serve their current and future customers will remain the number one goal of the company.
